University of Cape Coast (UCC) on Friday honoured Ghana’s Vice-President, Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, with its first-ever Distinguished Fellow Award in recognition of her exceptional contributions to the growth of the university and the nation. The colourful ceremony featured heartfelt tributes celebrating her impact on higher education, gender equality, and national development, and included a symbolic robing to mark the conferment of the honour.
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang has consistently broken barriers throughout her career. She became the first female Vice-Chancellor of a public university in Ghana and later achieved another historic milestone by becoming the country’s first female Vice-President.
During her time at UCC, she achieved several groundbreaking milestones. She served as the first female Dean of the Faculty of Arts, later became the first female Dean of the School of Graduate Studies, and eventually rose to become the university’s first female Vice-Chancellor—making her the first woman to lead a public university in Ghana.
To celebrate her remarkable academic journey, resilience, and ambition, the university hosted a ceremony attended by prominent personalities from politics, religion, traditional leadership, academia, and business. Among the distinguished guests were UCC Chancellor Sam Jonah, Chairman of the UCC Governing Council William Atuguba, Bank of Ghana Governor Johnson Pandit Asiama, and Inspector-General of Police Christian Tetteh Yohuno.
Traditional leaders present included Odeefuo Amoakwa Boadu, President of the Central Regional House of Chiefs; Osabarimba Kwesi Atta II, Omanhen of the Oguaa Traditional Area; and Nana Oketakye Komeh VIII, Omanhen of the Komenda Traditional Area. Former vice-chancellors, academics, clergy, security officials, staff, and students also attended the event.
In his address, Chancellor Sam Jonah praised the Vice-President as a trailblazer, patriot, and woman of integrity. He noted that at a time when public trust in institutions is being tested, her example demonstrates that principled leadership remains possible. He highlighted how she rose to become the first female Vice-Chancellor in the history of UCC and the first woman to lead any public university in Ghana, achievements he said were accomplished through excellence, determination, and character rather than confrontation.
He further recalled that her leadership journey eventually led her to become Ghana’s first female Vice-President, the highest constitutional office ever held by a woman in the country’s history. According to him, her story serves as a powerful example for students, showing that dedication, courage, and service can lead to extraordinary achievements.
In her acceptance speech, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang expressed gratitude to her family, friends, and colleagues who supported her throughout her life and career. She emphasised that education should inspire individuals to serve humanity and contribute meaningfully to society.
She thanked UCC for the honour and acknowledged the institution for instilling values that shaped her personal and professional life. She stressed that higher education is a privilege and must go beyond theoretical learning to create positive national impact.
The Acting Vice-Chancellor of UCC, Denis Aheto, also commended the Vice-President for her leadership during her tenure as Vice-Chancellor. He noted that her administration brought significant infrastructural development, strengthened human capacity, and enhanced the university’s international reputation.
Prof. Aheto added that her numerous historic achievements continue to inspire many across Ghana and beyond, demonstrating that leadership rooted in scholarship and public service can drive meaningful change. He explained that the Distinguished Fellow honour was meant to celebrate her outstanding excellence, leadership, and service to both the nation and humanity.
