UENR final-year student dies after suspected chemical poisoning

The management of the University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR) has officially announced the passing of a final-year student, Godfred Akomaning, who was studying for a Bachelor of Science degree in Petroleum Engineering.

In a statement released on March 24, the university disclosed that the student passed away on Saturday, March 21, 2026, while undergoing treatment at Sunyani Teaching Hospital.

The statement explained that a medical report from the hospital confirmed the cause of death as organophosphate poisoning, a condition that occurs when the body is exposed to chemical substances commonly present in certain agricultural chemicals and toxic agents. The body has since been transferred to the Sefwi Anwiaso Community Hospital mortuary.

UENR management extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, friends, and the entire university community over the tragic loss. The university also stated that investigations would be carried out to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident and assured the public that further updates would be provided once all facts are established.

Additionally, the university reiterated its commitment to ensuring a safe and secure environment for both students and staff.
